Anderson family papers, 1832-1915.

Consists chiefly of correspondence of the Anderson family of Rockbridge County, Virginia, chiefly Robert Blain Anderson, a general merchant and farmer and his granddaughter Mary Brown Anderson, as well as family members who emigrated to Tennessee, North Carolina and Ohio before the Civil War and to California after the Civil War. Topics include the Civil War and reconstruction, Brownsburg Academy, Princeton Theological Seminary in 1831, and genealogy of the Anderson and related families including Curry and Snider. With the papers is a memoranda book containing expenditures for building a house [Cedar Grove?], 183[8?]; a copy of the will of Christian Anderson, 1848, mentioning slaves with accompanying estate appraisal, bill of sale for personal property, executors' accounts, and some social invitations.

William H. Anderson was born in Londonderry, New Hampshire, on January 12, 1836. He attended Yale University from 1855 until 1859 and in 1860 began studying law with Morse & Stevens in Massachusetts. After passing the bar in 1862 Anderson acted as a trial lawyer in Lowell, where he also served on the common council and school board.
